Chemistry Professor visits TY Science class
Professor Suresh Pillai, Chemistry department of the IT Sligo visited the Transition Year class in Magh Ene College yesterday. He spoke to the students about how his research group had used nanotechnology to develop an antimicrobial material that is resistant to the superbug MRSA. This material has been incorporated into tiles for use in hospitals etc. He also spoke to the students about time-management.

Dr. Gabriella Farries, a research scientist from UCD, visited the TY Science class today. Dr. Farries gave a very interesting presentation on 'How do genes help some horses run faster than others'. Thanks to Ms. Higgins who organised this visit.

Forensic Science lecturer visits LC Chemistry class
Dr. Fiona McArdle from the Forensic Science Department in the IT Sligo, spoke to the LC Chemistry class in Magh Ene College today regarding course options in IT Sligo and careers in science.
Spectroscopy in a Suitcase
Dr. Sarah Hayes, University of Limerick, visited the Leaving Certificate Chemistry class in Magh Ene College today as part of the Spectroscopy in a Suitcase programme. The students had the opportunity to work with instrumentation such as UV and IR spectrometers.

First Year Tour to BT Young Scientist
A great day was had by the first year students from Magh Ene College who visited the BT Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition in the RDS on Friday 13th January. The students visited the different project stands as well as visiting the displays in the EcoZone and the World of Science & Technology. We hope that these budding scientists have gained lots of inspiration for their own projects in the future. Thanks also to Ms. Donnelly, Ms. Meehan, Ms. Patton and Ms. Smith who accompanied the students.

BT Young Scientist 2017
Magh Ene College was very well represented at the 2017 BT Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition in the RDS last week from Wednesday 11th – Saturday 14th January. Nine Transition Year students from the college presented four different projects at the competition. This was the greatest number of projects from a single school in County Donegal. The students were accompanied by their teacher Ms. Higgins. The names of the students and their projects are as follows:
- Tara Dolan and Chloe Kilkenny: ‘A Survey of Parental Attitudes in the North-West towards the HPV Vaccine’. The students received a Highly Commended Award for their project.
- Caolán Clancy, Rachel Currid and Jamie-Lee Clancy: ‘A Case-study into Public Awareness of Microbeads in Personal Care Products’.
- Aine Dillon, Niamh Creevy and Katie Curran: ‘An Investigation into the Effects of Trampling on Ground-dwelling Insects in a Sand Dune Ecosystem in Co. Donegal’.
- Conor Herity: ‘An investigation into developing a more efficient method of drying woodchip for use in boilers’

Coillte Guest Speaker
As part of the celebrations for Science Week, Kieran Moloney from Coillte visited the TY classes today to give what proved to be a very informative and interesting talk on the work of Coillte. Thanks to Kieran for taking the time out from his busy schedule to visit Magh Ene College. This visit was organised by Ms. Higgins.

Science Week 2016 commences tomorrow Sunday, 13th November. This will be celebrated next week in Magh Ene College with a variety of events including guest speakers, poster competitions, students taking part in the Irish Science Teachers' Association senior Science Quiz and daily Science questions at Tutor class. These will also be posted on this account each day next week to allow all at home to get involved in the celebrations!
A full programme of events will also run in the IT Sligo for the duration of the week - these free events are open to all members of the public.

Dr. Sarah Hayes, from the University of Limerick, who was on the Late Late Show last night (11th November) with Daire O'Briain, will visit Magh Ene College at the end of January to deliver the 'Spectroscopy in a Suitcase' programme to LC Chemistry students. This programme which is sponsored by the Royal Society of Chemistry allows second level students to use analytical instruments normally only available at third level in their own school laboratory.

'Progress and Discovery in Science' TY poster competition
Entries from the TY Science class into the IT Sligo Science Week 'Progress and Discovery in Science' poster competition. The students posters will be on display in the IT Sligo this Sunday at their annual Science fair which is free and open to members of the public. BT Young Scientist 2017:
Four projects from Magh Ene College have been accepted to exhibit at the 2017 BT Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition in the RDS in January. This year saw the highest number of project entries to date with 2,091 project submissions. Only one in four of these were accepted into the exhibition. Amgen Biotech Experience:
For the second year in a row, Magh Ene College is taking part in the Amgen Biotech Experience in connection with UCD. As part of this programme, the school receives materials on loan for a two week period to allow students to carry out DNA analysis using equipment normally only available at third level or in industry. Forty schools in the country, mainly in the Dublin area are taking part in this programme this year. Thanks to Ms.Higgins to attended the training day for this initiative. Over the course of the two week period a range of Science classes from different year groups and subject areas (Biology, Chemistry, Agricultural Science and Junior Cycle Science) had the opportunity to take part in this highlyenjoyable programme.
