Dr. Gabriella Farries, a research scientist from UCD, visited the TY Science class today.  Dr. Farries gave a very interesting presentation on 'How do genes help some horses run faster than others'.  Thanks to Ms. Higgins who organised this visit.

BT Young Scientist 2017

Magh Ene College was very well represented at the 2017 BT Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition in the RDS last week from Wednesday 11^th – Saturday 14^th January.  Nine Transition Year students from the college presented four different projects at the competition.  This was the greatest number of projects from a single school in County Donegal.  The students were accompanied by their teacher Ms. Higgins. The names of the students and their projects are as follows:

• Tara Dolan and Chloe Kilkenny: ‘A Survey of Parental Attitudes in the North-West towards the HPV Vaccine’. The students received a Highly Commended Award for their project.
• Caolán Clancy, Rachel Currid and Jamie-Lee Clancy: ‘A Case-study into Public Awareness of Microbeads in Personal Care Products’.
• Aine Dillon, Niamh Creevy and Katie Curran: ‘An Investigation into the Effects of Trampling on Ground-dwelling Insects in a Sand Dune Ecosystem in Co. Donegal’.
• Conor Herity: ‘An investigation into developing a more efficient method of drying woodchip for use in boilers’

Coillte Guest Speaker

As part of the celebrations for Science Week, Kieran Moloney from Coillte visited the TY classes today to give what proved to be a very informative and interesting talk on the work of Coillte. Thanks to Kieran for taking the time out from his busy schedule to visit Magh Ene College. This visit was organised by Ms. Higgins.

'Progress and Discovery in Science' TY poster competition

Entries from the TY Science class into the IT Sligo Science Week 'Progress and Discovery in Science' poster competition. The students posters will be on display in the IT Sligo this Sunday at their annual Science fair which is free and open to members of the public. Well done to all the TY students who worked with Emma McCarthy and Patricia Friel from Junior Achievement Ireland this morning to evaluate a new Junior Cycle Science programme.

Professor John Costello: Presentations

Professor John Costello, Dean of Science, Dublin City University, gave the following two presentations to the TY Science class.

We were delighted to welcome Professor John Costello, Dean of Science, Dublin City University, to Magh Ene College.  Professor Costello gave a presentation on 'Ultrafast, Ultrashort, Ultraintense - Extreme Physics with Lasers' to the TY students and carried out some demonstrations using liquid nitrogen as seen in the attached photos.
