Forensic Science lecturer visits LC Chemistry class

Dr. Fiona McArdle from the Forensic Science Department in the IT Sligo, spoke to the LC Chemistry class in Magh Ene College today regarding course options in IT Sligo and careers in science.

Spectroscopy in a Suitcase

Dr. Sarah Hayes, University of Limerick, visited the Leaving Certificate Chemistry class in Magh Ene College today as part of the Spectroscopy in a Suitcase programme. The students had the opportunity to work with instrumentation such as UV and IR spectrometers.

First Year Tour to BT Young Scientist

A great day was had by the first year students from Magh Ene College who visited the BT Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition in the RDS on Friday 13th January. The students visited the different project stands as well as visiting the displays in the EcoZone and the World of Science & Technology. We hope that these budding scientists have gained lots of inspiration for their own projects in the future. Thanks also to Ms. Donnelly, Ms. Meehan, Ms. Patton and Ms. Smith who accompanied the students.

BT Young Scientist 2017

Magh Ene College was very well represented at the 2017 BT Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition in the RDS last week from Wednesday 11^th – Saturday 14^th January.  Nine Transition Year students from the college presented four different projects at the competition.  This was the greatest number of projects from a single school in County Donegal.  The students were accompanied by their teacher Ms. Higgins. The names of the students and their projects are as follows:

• Tara Dolan and Chloe Kilkenny: ‘A Survey of Parental Attitudes in the North-West towards the HPV Vaccine’. The students received a Highly Commended Award for their project.
• Caolán Clancy, Rachel Currid and Jamie-Lee Clancy: ‘A Case-study into Public Awareness of Microbeads in Personal Care Products’.
• Aine Dillon, Niamh Creevy and Katie Curran: ‘An Investigation into the Effects of Trampling on Ground-dwelling Insects in a Sand Dune Ecosystem in Co. Donegal’.
• Conor Herity: ‘An investigation into developing a more efficient method of drying woodchip for use in boilers’
